Meet the PharmiWeb Team: Mike Wood
Can you provide a brief outline of your role?
As the marketing manager & editor, I have overall control over the marketing strategy and content on the sites we own. I am also constantly "horizon scanning" for new technologies, platforms, techniques that might help improve what we do and our offerings.
How long have you been at PharmiWeb?
Almost since the start. I joined in 2004 when I had more hair.
What do you do in your spare time?
I'm lucky enough to live in Cornwall, so I can spend a lot of time walking on the beach or taking part in outdoor activities like kayaking and paddleboarding (when it's warm enough). I'm also a keen (although not very proficient) musician but seem to collect guitars more than I play them at the moment. I also enjoy woodworking and make furniture (and sawdust) and other bits and pieces when time allows.
Can you share some of your standout moments at PharmiWeb?
PharmiWeb has come a long way in the time I've been here. As a result, we're far more professional and scalable than we were a few years back, but still maintain a small and dynamic team.
Moving to the Madgex platform was a major step forward for us, and now having a robust platform that is supported, maintained & developed by the Madgex team means we can focus our efforts on growing the job board and the services we offer.
Although not a "moment" I think the fact that we've been profitable every one of the 25 years is a major achievement.
What do you think makes us unique, both as a business and a team?
I believe that our core strengths lie in the fact that we are a small, approachable team. Our clients know that they can reach us, and we'll do our utmost to support them in their goals any way we can. Jobseekers too know that we're a great source of industry jobs and career insights.
As a small independent team, we can also respond quickly to any requirements or opportunities as they arise. There's no massive hierarchy, and every one of our team has an input on our direction and can make suggestions or come up with ideas that are genuinely listened to. This means we can make decisions or changes to the way we do things very quickly indeed, making us very nimble.
How do you think PharmiWeb has changed since you joined?
We've grown but not at an uncontrollable rate - so we've kept the best bits without introducing too many processes and procedures that slow down the whole business, but we do now have much better systems in place so we can be more consistent and informed, with the ability to grow.
Our goals and visions have expanded too. We used to have a mini celebration when somebody placed an online order for a job posting. But now it happens constantly, so we've raised our expectations to "global level" contracts.
The team has clearly grown too. Our team is a fantastic, talented group with diverse yet highly complementary skills, who will always step in to support each other or an urgent project.
What do you see in the future for PharmiWeb?
As the biggest dedicated life science job board in Europe, the next step is the world :-). The USA holds the biggest opportunity for us, so with our US job board in place, we're ready to grow this region significantly in the coming years.
